APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN FOR 2024!
- To be awarded a 2024 scholarship, an application/interview process is held in 2023 and the scholarship commences in 2024.
- Each scholarship bursary is valued at US $25,000
TO BE ELIGIBLE, YOU MUST BE:
- An individual who makes a living from agriculture, either as a primary producer or working in the industry.
- Typically between 25 and 45 years of age, but exceptional candidates outside that age range will be considered.
- Seeking to develop capacity and experience through travel and exploration.
- Living
and working in countries where Nuffield International scholarships are
available: Argentina, Chile, Germany, Japan, Kenya, Poland, USA and
Zimbabwe.
APPLICATION DATES:
- 20 July 2023: Applications open
- 7 October 2023: Applications close
- 19-31 October 2023: Scholarship interviews,
either face-to-face or via video link
- 14 November 2023: 2023 Scholars announced
All Scholars will begin their
scholarship in 2024.
COMPULSORY DATES:
- 9-17 March 2024: Contemporary
Scholars Conference, in Brazil
- Between April 2024 and October 2024: Global Focus Program (GFP) group tours of 5 weeks duration
- March 2024 - February 2025: Individual
research component of 7 weeks
- Early-2025: Final written report

SCHOLARSHIP OVERVIEW:
Successful candidates must:
- Speak fluent English.
- Review and sign a contract outlining the
obligations of both parties.
- Participate in pre-travel activities with
scholars/management (webinars/virtual meetings).
- Identify an industry mentor and commit to
submitting quarterly reports sharing insight on progress, activities, and
travel throughout the scholarship.
- Attend the 2024 Nuffield International
Contemporary Scholars Conference (CSC).
- Participate in a 5-week 2024 Global Focus
Program (GFP) travel experience.
- Complete a minimum of 7-weeks of
self-organised travel focusing on the personal research topic. Up to two
weeks can include research in your home country, subject to approval of a
proposed itinerary. A spouse/partner is able to travel with you at their
own cost.
- Submit a 10,000-word culminating report by
early-2025, outlining your study topic, travels, research, and
findings.
- Present your scholarship outcomes and report
findings at a key industry meeting in your home country.
AVAILABLE SCHOLARSHIPS:
Scholarships
should focus on sustainable solutions for the future of agriculture in areas such
as soil health, technology innovations, risk mitigation, natural capital, public policy in agriculture, diversity and inclusion, regenerative agriculture or carbon sequestration. Specifically, available scholarships include:
1. TIAA-CREF and Climate AI Scholarship: For farmers and agribusiness professionals with preferred study topic areas including:
- Impacts of climate change on high value crop
value chains.
- Adaptation strategies for specialty crops due
to climate change.
- Pest and disease evolution in response to
changing climate: risks and potential mitigation strategies.
- Biodiversity in the context of climate change
and needs for increased agricultural productivity.
- Water risk, climate change, potential impacts
to agriculture, and technology/strategies to mitigate.
2. TIAA-CREF Global Agriculture Scholarship: For farmers and agribusiness professionals with preferred study topics areas including:
- Disruption to conventional farming systems
from new technology.
- Models for institutional investors capital to
provide opportunities for young and family farmers.
- Mixed farming systems and their relevance in
sustainable farming systems in the future.
- Natural capital / valuing natural capital and
its intrinsic contribution to land values.
- Quality standards and certification as a
reference of sustainability and their importance to farmers and
landowners.
- How to maintain and Improve Soil Health
- Sustainable Water Use Practices
(Irrigation)
3. PSP Investments Scholarship: For farmers and agribusiness professionals from Chile, the USA, Argentina and Kenya. Topics of interest for this scholarship is carbon sequestration, carbon neutrality, yield sustainability and input reduction.

USA MidAtlantic Region Scholarship: For farmers and
agriculturalprofessionals between 25 and 40 years old who reside in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, the Virginia counties
of Morgan, Berkeley, Jefferson, Frederick, Clarke, Warren, Shenandoah, and
Page; and the West Virginia counties of Hancock, Brooke, Ohio and Marshall. Investor sponsors include Horizon Farm Credit, Mountaire
Farms, the Delaware Department of Agriculture, and Kee's Creek Farm.
5.
USA North Carolina Scholarship: For farmers and
agricultural professionals between 25 and 40 years old who reside in the State
of North Carolina. Investor sponsors include Ag
Carolina Farm Credit, North Carolina Sweet Potato Association, North Carolina
State University College of Agricultural Sciences, Mrs. Dale Boone, and Griffin
Farms.
6. USAIowa Scholarship: For farmers and agricultural
professionals between 25 and 40 years old who reside in the State of Iowa. Investor sponsors include the Iowa Farm Bureau
Association, the Iowa Soybean Association, the Iowa Pork Producers Association
and The People's Company.
7.
USA California Scholarship: For farmers and agricultural
professionals between 25 and 40 years old who reside in the State of California. Investor sponsors include the California Cotton
Alliance, Terra Nova Ranch, California Fresh Fruit Growers Association, Agrian,
Stevens Farms, and Mechanical Design LLC.
8. Japan Norinchukin Bank Scholarship: For Japanese farmers and agribusiness professionals.
9.Germany Scholarship: For German farmers and
agribusiness professionals, supported by a coalition of German companies.
10. Poland Top Farms Group Scholarship: For Polish farmers and agribusiness professionals, supported by Top Farms Group.
Scholarships below with a (#) are contingent upon receiving investor support:
11. #Bayer Scholarship:Bayer Scholarship: For cropping farmers in the USA, Germany, Argentina and other countries who have a goal of transforming the agricultural industry.
12. #Argentina: ForArgentine farmers and agribusiness professionals, supported by a coalition of Argentinian companies.
13. #Chile:For Chilean farmers and agribusiness professionals, supported by a coalition of Chilean companies.
14. #Zimbabwe: For Zimbabwean farmers and
agribusiness professionals, coordinated by Nuffield Zimbabwe -
Co-scholarship funding is also available from the
Chris Reichstein Philanthropy Fund. This fund has been generously donated by
2014 Nuffield Scholar Chris Reichstein, to invest in regional and rural
individuals by awarding Nuffield Scholarships in developing countries.
APPLICATIONS PACKAGE MUST INCLUDE:
- A completed and submitted online application
form.
- A current CV, in English.
- A high-resolution photo (at least 1MB).
- A video (in English) up to 90 seconds in
length introducing yourself, your work and interest in being a Nuffield
Scholar. Please record it in your work environment if possible. Use
horizontal view and record it in a well-lit spot, free of background
noise. Due to file size challenges we welcome links to your video
submission.
