Mariela Ramrez, a 2025 Nuffield Scholar, is an Agricultural Engineer and expert in rural development with over 15 years of experience in research, project management, and knowledge management in the nonprofit sector. She currently serves as Regional Publications Coordinator at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for Latin America and the Caribbean, overseeing agrifood knowledge products and fostering sustainable agricultural practices.
Mariela holds a Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy and a Diploma from Pontificia Universidad Catlica de Chile, as well as a Master's Degree in Environmental Studies from Utrecht University. Her academic achievements include the Prince Bernhard Scholarship (2012) and a Chilean Government Scholarship for Academic Excellence (2010). She is also a board member of La Canasta, a food cooperative promoting community-based food systems.
Through her Nuffield Scholarship, Mariela will explore the transformative potential of food cooperatives in reducing barriers for small farmers and enhancing local food systems. Her research focuses on creating alternative food networks that connect producers and consumers, offering small farmers better market access and consumers a convenient, community-focused shopping experience.
Mariela aims to study successful models worldwide to develop solutions that strengthen local food systems and foster sustainable agriculture.
