George Mailat, the first Romanian Nuffield Scholar, is a third-generation farmer managing a 200-hectare farm in central Romania, where he grows wheat, barley, corn, rapeseed, alfalfa, oats, beans, and sugar beet. Building on his family's legacy--farming 5 hectares under communism--George scaled up operations after taking over in 2010, blending tradition with modern technology.
A former electronics and computer engineer, George worked internationally as a radio network optimiser before returning to agriculture. His expertise in precision farming includes advanced tractor guidance systems, Bayer FieldView, and drone spectral data analysis. He holds master's degrees in Agricultural Machinery (Transilvania University of Brasov) and Ecological Agriculture (USAMV Cluj), with further studies on grain silos at Universidad Politechnica de Madrid.
George is committed to regenerative farming, implementing practices like minimum tillage, strip tillage, and cover crops to improve soil health. He participated in the SARMENTI H2020 project, validating real-time soil probe performance, and works with Bayer Romania to test rapeseed and corn hybrids.
With a passion for innovation and sustainability, George integrates cutting-edge technology to drive efficiency and resilience on his farm, ensuring a bright future for his family's agricultural legacy.
