Scholar Profile - 2024 Winner

Paul Windemuller - USA

Study: How can AI be integrated into ruminant livestock production to make the industry more resilient into the future?

Paul Windemuller of Coopersville, Michigan is the 2024 recipient of a Nuffield International scholarship supported by a coalition of USA investors.

Paul is a dairy farmer milking 260 cows using robot technology as well as performing consulting work within the wider agricultural sector. A believer in lifelong learning, Paul looks forward to using his passion for agriculture, innovation and technology to investigate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it can change farming for the better into the future.

"We need to make our livestock industries more resilient in the future," says Paul. "Instead of being fearful of AI, I believe we need to be proactive and look for the good in what AI can do to help us steward resources and care for our livestock better."

"AI technology is changing the way we raise livestock rapidly and has endless uses in ways we don't even yet envision. It could help to reduce animal illness, antibiotic use, forecast production more accurately and so much more."

Paul hopes to visit Australia and New Zealand as well as several European countries, such as Netherlands, Germany and Denmark that are already using AI.
