Artificial Intelligence is rapidly becoming one of the most transformative forces in global agriculture. In his newly published Nuffield International report, 2024 Nuffield International USA Scholar Paul Windemuller examines how AI is reshaping livestock production -- not as a single tool, but as a powerful system that enhances decision-making, productivity and resilience on farm.

Through travel and research across 15 countries, Paul identified key opportunities and challenges in AI adoption, and developed three frameworks to guide the sector forward:

AI Yield Gap - the divide between farms that collect data and those that act on it

Livestock AI Readiness Index (LARI) - a benchmark for AI preparedness

Holistic Insight Threshold (HIT) - when connected data drives transformational decisions

He also proposes AI Data Stewardship Cooperatives - farmer-owned structures to ensure producers maintain ownership of their data and benefit from AI-driven insights.

His conclusion is clear: AI will not replace farmers -- but farmers who use AI will shape the future of agriculture.

Paul's full report is now available.
