Introducing the 2019 Nuffield International Scholars


In 2019, there are six Nuffield International Farming Scholars representing the countries of Brazil, Chile, and the United States of America.

Allan Cooper – Chile
Allan Cooper

Allan is from Temuco, Chile, and is the first Nuffield Scholar from his country. An agricultural entrepreneur, he runs Comercializadora de Alimentos Coalco Ltda, working as a potato broker, as well as growing and selling carrots and potatoes through part of his family’s farm. During his Nuffield travels Allan will explore opportunities for agricultural, community, and economic development in his home region through incentivizing conversion from traditional agricultural crops to fruit production.

Henrique Campos – Brazil
Henrique Campos

Henrique is from Ribeirao Prero, São Paulo, Brazil. He is a Ph.D. who started SABRI Sabedoria Agricola in 2016. SABRI has consultants working on projects related to precision agriculture, entomology, biology, and animal science. As a Nuffield Scholar, Henrique will explore innovations to reduce spray drift from ground and aerial pesticide application. During his travels, Henrique will look into how other countries are facing the challenge of using pesticides without environmental damage by meeting farmers who are managing pesticide applications and those who have been impacted by pesticide drift damage.

Ollavo Queiroz Tinoco

Ollavo is from Guaranta, São Paulo, Brazil. He is operational manager of Santa Maria Farm/Tinoco Eggs, representing the third generation of his family to be involved in the eggs, sugar cane, and beef cattle operation in northwest Sao Paulo. During his Nuffield travels Ollavo will investigate family succession and continuance, exploring potential relationships between the management of the operations and its country politics and economy and how farmers pass their businesses on to future generations.

Rose  Danaher

Rose Danaher is from Amana, Iowa, United States of America. She is a farmer, and works as a watershed coordinator for the Iowa County Soil and Water Conservation District. For her research, Rose will investigate strategies to reduce the water quality impacts of production agriculture, and will develop tactics to educate the public about what farmers are doing to improve water quality.

Susan Truehart Garey

Susan Garey is from Harrington, Delaware, United States of America. She is a family farm operator and serves as an agent for the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension Service. Susan is interested in exploring sustainable methods of animal agriculture production around the world for her Nuffield research. As part of her studies, Susan will investigate systems-based, holistic approaches to livestock production.

Thiago is from São Paulo, Brazil. He has more than 18 years of experience in sales, business and product development, trade marketing, processes optimization, and planning and supply chain in the petrochemical, mining, consumer goods, and agribusiness industries.
